2023 Didactics Series: End of Life Options New Mexico

Join us Wednesday January 18 at noon as Dr. Lisa Stolarczyk and Nancy Abell of End of Life Options New Mexico deliver our first didactic lecture of the year.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

Cite New Mexico’s eligibility requirements for Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), and the rationale for this end-of-life option,
Describe MAID pharmacology, preparation, routes of administration, and potential complications that could affect successful ingestion of MAID prescriptions,
Outline clinical and family counseling procedures before and after MAID medication ingestion,
Cite legal requirements for documentation of terminal prognosis, competency, pronouncement of death, documentation (including death certificate) and data filing.

Press Release: Hudgins Steps Down as Executive Director

Scott to Serve as Interim Executive Director

It is with sadness and gratitude that we announce that Holley Hudgins will be stepping down as Executive Director of the New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium (NMPCTC), effective January 13, 2023.

“It’s been an honor to serve as executive director over the past two years. I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work alongside such talented, committed individuals,” said Hudgins. “With our amazing Board of Directors and talented staff we will continue to develop creative approaches, including policy innovations to better support the health of New Mexicans.”

Dr. Mary Alice Scott, NMPCTC’s Director of Social Medicine and Education, will assume the role of Interim Executive Director while a search is conducted for a new Executive Director.

“I’m honored to be asked to serve as Interim Executive Director for NMPCTC following the incredible leadership of Holley Hudgins,” said Dr. Scott. “This is a great opportunity to serve New Mexico by supporting the growth and development of graduate medical education and reduce health disparities in the state. The NMPCTC staff is incredibly talented and committed to health equity, and I look forward to continuing that work with them in the coming year.”

The NMPCTC would like to thank Holley for her service and exceptional leadership, and we wish her the best as she enters the next chapter in her life.

2022 Didactic Series: Amelia Clement: MD

Dr. Amelia Clement of Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM, delivers our penultimate didactic lecture of the year with a focus on women’s health and a patient-centered approach to pregnancy options counseling.

After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Recognize the importance of delivering pregnancy test results in a neutral fashion
Identify strategies for counseling about pregnancy options including parenting, adoption, and abortion
Explain how reproductive justice principles inform pregnancy options counseling

HSD Primary Care Physician Training Request for Applications (FY23)

In accordance with the Human Services Department’s (HSD) 5-year strategic plan for GME expansion in New Mexico, HSD is now soliciting applications for primary care residency expansion grant funding for programs interested in creating new, or expanding existing, primary care training programs in the state.

Eligible applicants for this RFA include:

New Mexico licensed hospitals;
academic medical education institutions;
new or proposed freestanding graduate medical education programs;
established or new graduate medical education training consortiums; or,
Federally Qualified Health Centers or Rural Health Clinics.

Eligible GME programs interested in applying must:

be an existing, new, or planned, nationally accredited, non-military residency program;
have, or intend to have, First-Year Residency Positions, as defined in Appendix A in the RFA; and,
intend to create new First-Year Positions through expansion of an existing program or establishment of a new primary care residency program.

Priority may be given to applications that emphasize 1) the creation or expansion of primary care specialty programs; and 2) increasing or expanding the number of primary care positions at existing programs in medically underserved, and health professional shortage affected areas within the state.

The New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium (NMPCTC) is inviting all interested applicants to attend an informational webinar on Wednesday October 26 at 1:30 p.m. to review the RFA and answer application questions.

Those interested in applying for funding must submit a letter of interest to HSD and the NMPCTC by November 15, 2022. HSD offered the following deadlines for applicants:

January 31, 2023 – Existing programs currently receiving HSD grant funding
February 28, 2023 – New applicants seeking first time funding

Press Release: Primary Care, Graduate Medical Education Expansion Focus of Senator Correa Hemphill HMS Site Visit

Silver City, N.M. – During New Mexico Human Services Department’s (HSD) state-wide tours of all primary care residency programs, Senator Siah Correa Hemphill met with HSD, Hidalgo Medical Services, and the New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium about the impact of primary care residency programs in New Mexico while at Hidalgo Medical Services’ community health clinic. Senator Correa Hemphill pledged her continued support for the state-wide expansion of graduate medical education programs.

“It’s important that we work together to do as much as we can to support these initiatives for strengthening primary care services,” said Senator Correa Hemphill. “All New Mexicans deserve accessible and equitable healthcare and supporting these primary care residency programs is a necessary first step toward accomplishing that goal.”

Last year, HSD published a strategic plan that outlines the expansion of primary care residency programs throughout New Mexico over the next five years. The plan includes initiatives to establish new residency programs throughout the state and strengthen existing programs through faculty recruitment and support. The plan also includes initiatives aimed at increasing the number of residents allowed per program and retaining residents, so they continue to practice medicine in New Mexico after graduation. The expansion of graduate medical education training programs in the state is expected to have several benefits, including greater physician coverage for underserved areas of the state, better health outcomes for the population, and positive impacts on the economy of areas where programs are located.

Earlier this year, Senator Correa Hemphill awarded HSD $100,000 in junior funds, which was then supplemented through additional federal match funds, to assist with state-wide efforts to support residency programs through recruitment, retention, and faculty development initiatives with the help of the NM Primary Care Training Consortium.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Senator Hemphill for all of her support in our primary care graduate medical education expansion efforts,” said Alex Castillo Smith, Manager of Strategic Planning & Special Projects for the New Mexico Human Services Department. “At a time when we’re seeing health care provider shortages across the nation, it’s great to have the support of our elected officials who are proactive and committed to ensuring a strong future for New Mexico’s healthcare system.”
