UNM Santa Fe Family Medicine Residency Program is a unique “1+2” training model designed to cultivate compassionate, community-focused family physicians. Residents begin with a foundational intern year at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, followed by two years of immersive, community-based training in Santa Fe.
This residency is jointly sponsored by the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, and La Familia Medical Center, offering a rich blend of academic rigor and hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings. Residents serve at federally qualified health centers and health system-owned clinics, gaining exposure to underserved, rural, and immigrant populations.
The program emphasizes advocacy, health equity, and legislative engagement, with all residents completing a dedicated rotation at the New Mexico State Legislature. Graduates are known for their leadership in health policy and their commitment to serving marginalized communities.

Program Highlights

Advocacy and Legislative Rotation Every resident participates in a hands-on rotation at the New Mexico State Legislature, learning health policy and advocacy. Alumni have played key roles in shaping state healthcare legislation.
Strong Outcomes and Retention The program boasts a 100% board pass rate, with over 80% of graduates remaining in New Mexico, 40% practicing rurally, and more than half serving underserved communities—demonstrating its impact on local healthcare.
