The University of New Mexico Psychiatry Residency Program offers a dynamic, mission-driven training experience that prepares residents to become exceptional psychiatrists while making a meaningful impact on the mental health of New Mexico’s diverse communities. Based in Albuquerque, the program combines the academic strength of New Mexico’s only academic medical center with extensive community-based training, exposing residents to the full spectrum of psychiatric care—from inpatient and consultation-liaison psychiatry to integrated primary care, addiction medicine, forensic psychiatry, and rural behavioral health.

Residents train in one of the nation’s most culturally diverse settings, caring for patients from urban, rural, frontier, Tribal, and Hispanic communities while developing expertise in delivering equitable, culturally responsive psychiatric care. The curriculum balances strong foundations in neuroscience, psychotherapy, and evidence-based medicine with early clinical responsibility, close faculty mentorship, and protected educational time.

UNM also encourages residents to tailor their training through specialized opportunities in rural psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, physician-scientist training, integrative psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and global health experiences.
