At the heart of Albuquerque, the University of New Mexico (UNM) Internal Medicine Residency Program nurtures compassionate, adept physicians—equipped for academic subspecialties or rural primary care alike. Anchored at the state’s only Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke center, and supported by the esteemed UNM Hospital and VA Medical Center, the program offers unmatched clinical exposure across a vast and diverse patient population, especially among underserved communities.

In a culture rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion, UNM fosters a collaborative learning environment where mutual respect, intellectual curiosity, and teamwork flourish while still preserving resident autonomy. The learning framework includes protected academic time—like Thursday half-days featuring case-based didactics, ABIM-style reviews, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, and journal clubs—as well as embedded scholarly activity and quality improvement requirements to develop future medical leaders.

More than just standard rotations, UNM invites residents to design their own electives—from medical economics to integrative medicine—and rotate through traditional and nontraditional sites, including rural hospitals and the Navajo Nation. Research and scholarly pursuits are well-supported, with access to resources like the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, CTSC biostatistics support, and opportunities for extended research blocks culminating in presentations or manuscripts.
