For more than 50 years, the University of New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program has been preparing family physicians to provide exceptional, full-spectrum care while improving the health of New Mexico’s diverse communities. Based in Albuquerque, the program combines the resources of New Mexico’s only academic health center with a mission centered on health equity, community engagement, and caring for patients across every stage of life.
Residents receive broad, hands-on training in inpatient and outpatient medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, addiction medicine, behavioral health, reproductive health, hospital medicine, and community-based care. A robust population health curriculum, strong procedural training, and opportunities to care for underserved urban, rural, and Tribal communities ensure graduates are well prepared for virtually any practice setting.
The program fosters a collaborative, resident-centered culture where mentorship, wellness, and professional growth are valued alongside clinical excellence. With customizable electives, nationally recognized faculty, and unique opportunities in leadership, advocacy, and community partnership, UNM empowers residents to become compassionate physicians and future leaders in family medicine.
