Trainings aim to strengthen organization, primary care training in New Mexico, and community partnerships
In late April, NMPCTC board members and staff participated in separate, yet equally transformative retreats aimed at enhancing leadership and operational effectiveness across the organization’s personnel.
On April 26, NMPCTC board members from around the state convened in Truth or Consequences for a retreat led by Joel Kampf and Toni Aspin from the Inclusive Leadership Project. This gathering focused on enhancing their roles as effective board members and leaders of primary care residency programs. During this session, the attendees revised the mission and vision statements of the NMPCTC, aligning them more closely with the current evolution of the organization and the dynamic nature of graduate medical education in the state.
On April 30, several days after the board retreat, NMPCTC staff participated in their own retreat, featuring a workshop by Dr. Arvind Singhal, a noted Professor of Communication and Director of the Social Justice Initiative at the University of Texas at El Paso. The workshop introduced the Positive Deviance approach, a method for addressing social challenges through atypical yet successful behaviors or strategies. Participants, including guests from CHRISTUS Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Doña Ana County Health and Human Services, explored how to apply this innovative approach to enhance program development and improve strategies for recruitment and retention.
These back-to-back retreats signify NMPCTC’s proactive approach to leadership development and innovative problem-solving, while also strengthening our organization’s commitment to supporting primary care training throughout New Mexico. By empowering board members and staff with new tools and perspectives, NMPCTC is well-equipped to lead transformative change in the world of primary care training, ensuring our mission and vision remain at the forefront of the work we do with our partners throughout the state.
